A Community Conversation on
Civil Union and the Marriage Amendment will take place from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. on
Tuesday, Sept. 21 in the third floor courtroom of the Lexington History Museum
at 215 West Main Street. The conversation is a venue for a respectful discussion
on the legal perspectives of the proposed amendment to Kentucky’s constitution
that would define marriage as between one man and one woman and invalidate legal
status identical or similar to marriage for unmarried individuals. Moderator
Bill Goodman, from KET, will ask speakers Kent Ostrander, executive director of
the Family Foundation of Kentucky, and Dennis Stutsman, a member of the Kentucky
Fairness Alliance - Bluegrass Chapter, questions relating to the legal
perspectives of the proposed amendment and audience members will submit
questions in writing. The event is sponsored by the Lexington-Fayette Urban
County Human Rights Commission, the Lexington Network, and the National
Conference for Community and Justice. The speakers will represent both sides of
the legal perspectives on the amendment and how it will affect citizens of the
Commonwealth if passed in November.
Kent
Ostrander founded
the Family Foundation of Kentucky in 1989 and is its executive director. The
Family Foundation is a Kentucky nonprofit, educational organization that works
in the public policy arena protecting the traditional family and the values that
make families strong.
Dennis
M. Stutsman is an attorney and formerly served as statewide co-chair of the
Kentucky Fairness Alliance, a group promoting education and tolerance for gay,
lesbian, bisexual and transgender Kentuckians. He is actively involved as a
Kentucky citizen in opposing the passage of a constitutional amendment banning
any legal recognition of same sex relationships.
