“Race:  the Power of Illusion” A three-part film series exploring the myths and realities of race in America.  The first film, “The Difference Between Us”, will be screened on September 16, 2022 from 7.00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at the Carrick Theater on the campus of Transylvania University.  This film and the discussion that follows led by University of Kentucky Biologist William Burke, focuses on the recent scientific findings that suggest that race is a biological myth.

The second film, the “Story We Tell”, will be screened on October 7, 2003.  This uncovers the root of the race concept, and the hold it has gained over our minds. The program traces the transformation of tentative suspicions about difference into a "common-sense" wisdom that people used to explain everything from individual behavior to the fate of whole societies.  Dr. Horace Bartilow, U.K. Political Science, will be the discussion leader for this screening.

The third and final film, “The House We Live In”, will be screened on November 11, 2003 and focuses not on individual behaviors and attitudes, but on how our institutions shape and create race, giving different groups vastly different life chances. This episode examines social institutions that channel wealth and opportunity, so that white people benefit from a racist system without personally being racist.  Tim Wise, a nationally prominent social justice activist will be the discussion leader.

All film screenings will take place at the Carrick Theater on the campus of Transylvania University and will begin at 7.00 p.m.  For more information contact John Lindsay (859) 252-7781 jclind2@msn.com; Dinah Anderson (859) 323-7484, [email protected]; or Ron Alpern (859) 293-9355, [email protected].

Leadership Initiative on Erasing Racism/Erasing Racism Discussion Groups.  The Leadership Initiative on Erasing Racism is joint project of the National Conference for Community and Justice (NCCJ), the Kentucky League of Cities (KLC), and the NewCities Foundation. The mission of the initiative is to initiate sustained effective actions that will address, undo, and prevent racism in the seven leadership sectors - economic, education, faith, government, media, social and youth. Participants met with leaders in each sector for several months in 2001 and identified, defined, and strategized necessary and specific actions to be taken. The strategies were unveiled at a summit in November of 2001. Several actions have evolved from this initiative in the government media, social and youth sectors. There will be Leadership Summit II on Erasing Racism later this year to update the community on the progress in each sector. In addition, NCCJ hosted a twelve week series of email dialogues and the information from these dialogues will be discussed during the Erasing Racism discussion groups scheduled for Oct. 8, 11:30 a.m.-1:00 p.m. (Brown Bag lunch), and Oct. 9, 5:00-6:30 p.m. (munchies provided). Both session will take place at the NCCJ office at 112 N. Upper Street in Lexington.

People to People ConferencePeople to People is a National Conference for Community and Justice (NCCJ) forum that exposes over 300 high school students from Central and Eastern Kentucky to the history of intolerance in America through activities and dialogues that help students to look at their own biases. Action plans are developed to help students to create more inclusive environments within their own schools. The one-day conference, held at the University of Kentucky Student Center, is offered at NO COST to students and their sponsors. NCCJ is in need of individuals to facilitate small dialogue groups during the November conference.

If you are interested in working as a conference facilitator, or in further information, contact: Mahjabeen Rafiuddin, 859-255-6999, [email protected]
